Life at Salt

Landscaping at Salt Village

To trust, to protect and to preserve its rare environment, its sensitive ocean and its estuary foreshore. This responsibility required our environmental scientists to investigate and then determine the species of ground cover to be planted to ensure the long term protection and retention of the dunal system and the river banks:

"The landscape character of Salt Village is firmly grounded in its surrounding setting, integrating it into the natural environment of Cudgen Creek and the beach. The landscape philosophy for Salt is based on a seamless integration into the adjoining natural environment reflecting original vegetation patterns and creating a community that embodies the character of the Northern New South Wales coastal region."
Paul Druery, Landcscape Architect, Edaw (Aust.) Pty Ltd.

This research has been successfully completed with the advice of the local authority and the relevant NSW Government authorities.

To further guarantee that the newly planted species will reach full maturity, we have elevated the land by several metres so that view lines will always be maintained, even as the vegetation matures.

Salt Village - a special environment

Environment at Salt Village

It was a priority from day one when developing Salt Village to leave the softest footprint possible. The designers of Salt Village have dedicated vast areas of the Village to open spaces and have given priority to parkland and common areas so that residents and visitors can make the most of the pristine natural setting.

Among the most important features of Salt Village are the adjoining 26 hectares of Crown public lands forming natural areas along the beachfront and Cudgen Creek that have been protected and enhanced since the development began. Over 70, 000 plants, tens of thousands person hours and $2.5 million have been spent to ensure these natural areas are restored to their former glory. Proof of the success of the program is the number of animals, including threatened species that are now calling Salt Village home.

Management plans for the native vegetation along Cudgen Creek and on the beachfront were prepared as part of the application to undertake the development of Salt Village. These plans were reviewed and agreed to by Council, Department of Lands and other relevant government departments and the community. The actions described in these plans have now nearly all been implemented with more than 70, 000 plants planted on the site and the majority of weeds controlled.

There are many ways to enjoy the special environment at Salt Village. Most importantly though, it is the responsibility of all of us to ensure this special village is protected and enhanced for all to enjoy now and in the future
